The streets most affected by car theft - and the most common makes stolen

Seven cars are stolen every day across Merseyside, according to new figures.

It puts the region second in a list of the worst affected areas for car theft in the UK, with over 200 going missing every month.

Comparison website GoCompare sent Freedom of Information requests to police constabularies across the UK, 17 of the 43 regions came back with stats.

The numbers reveal in 2018 there had been 2,774 car thefts in Merseyside and broken down by roads, Great Howard Street in Liverpool was the worst affected with 11 cars stolen in one year - ranking this as 17th overall of the 17 constabularies included in the research.

Data released by Merseyside Police also shosw two roads in Bootle had the highest number of car thefts in 2018, Olympic Way with nine stolen vehicles and Canal Street with five.

The requests also looked at the types of cars stolen, coming in top in Merseyside was the Ford Focus with over 170 thefts in 2018.

The most frequently stolen makes in Merseyside

  1. Ford Focus -  172 car thefts
  2. Ford Fiesta -  113
  3. Volkswagen Golf -  75
  4. BMW 1 Series -  35
  5. Audi A3 Series -  21

Ford Focus tops the list in three constabularies. Combining the figures received from the 17 constabularies it's number two, while Ford Transit takes the top spot.

  3. Hornby Road, Liverpool -  8
  4. Canal Street, Bootle -  5
  5. Aigburth Road, Liverpool -  5

However, it is important to remember that this data is ranked in comparison with just 17 of the 43 constabularies across the UK.

  1. Kent Police - 3,444 car thefts (7% increase)
  2. Merseyside Police - 2,774 (11%)
  3. Hampshire Constabulary - 2,468 (4%)
  4. Nottinghamshire Police - 2,054 (21%)
  5. Leicestershire Constabulary - 1,971 (15%)
  6. Staffordshire Police - 1,805 (35%)
  7. Humberside Police - 1,723 (2%)
  8. Hertfordshire Constabulary - 1,646 (12%)
  9. Cleveland Police - 920 (6%)
  10. Northumbria Police -  907 (4%)
