The Strand will close to drivers this month as roadworks continue

The latest phase of roadworks on the Strand is set to see overnight closures in place for most of August.

Contractors working for Liverpool Council have begun the latest part of resurfacing works on the key waterfront road, meaning part of it will be closed in one direction overnight five times per week.

The council announced the news in a tweet earlier today.

The tweet said: “Resurfacing work has started on the northbound Strand.

“Works will take place each Sun-Thurs, 7pm-6am between Leeds St to close to Liver St. Work is due to be completed on 20 Aug.”

It is just the latest part of the massive overhaul of the Strand, itself only one part of a wider roads revamp in the city centre.

The work has seen huge changes to what is one of Liverpool’s busiest roads, with the removal of some traffic lanes and the installation of new cycle paths and the planting of new trees.

Now moving closer to completion, the Strand works have begun to receive positive feedback from residents as the revamped sections of the road become visible.

However, the wider Liverpool City Centre Connectivity Scheme, the larger city centre overhaul, has been hit by multiple controversies, with opponents raising concerns about multiple parts of the program.

They include issues with a new bus hub on Old Haymarket and a number of issues with the Lime Street portion of the scheme, which is still a long way from completion.

The overall scheme has also been pushed over budget, with the council’s cabinet forced to approved an extra £13m to take the project to completion.
