The Strand is looking very different as major work takes shape

Work on a major redesign of one of Liverpool's most iconic routes is progressing.

New images taken show how far work on The Strand and surrounding areas has progressed, with the area looking very different to how it used to.

The Strand scheme is part of the city council's controversial and heavily criticised £47m City Centre Connectivity Scheme - which is aimed at changing how people move around the city.

For months now, people have been frustrated and stuck in traffic as lane closures and other work has impacted movement along the waterfront area.

But as these images show, work has progressed on the £22m upgrade of The Strand, which is seeing a lane of traffic cut in each direction in a bid to reduce congestion and improve safety and air quality.

As the images show, many trees have been planted along the route and a lots of new public space has been created - which is intended to make the entire area more pedestrian-friendly.

And while traffic is running more smoothly in both directions along The Strand now - there is still likely to be further disruption to come as the project heads into its final stage.

The council has completed resurfacing on the southbound carriageway, which means no further road closures in that direction.

But resurfacing of the northbound carriageway will require the closure of the lanes with day time lane closures and night time road closures.

This is due to start around end of August and will require four weeks of works.

The council predicts that this phase of work will be completed by mid-October.
