The Strand Arts Centre - more than just cinema at the heart of East Belfast

It's been at the heart of East Belfast for decades, and the Strand Arts Centre will continue to entertain and educate for many years to come.

The historic building on the Holywood Road dates back to 1935 and is described as a "gem" of art deco architecture.

In 2013, the Strand Arts Centre was established and the building is no longer just about the latest movies.

Now it also hosts live theatre, music and literature events on a regular basis.

Chief executive Mimi Turtle told Belfast Live: "The Strand is a really iconic building, I think anybody familiar with East Belfast will know of it because it's a big landmark.

"It was built in 1935 by John McBride Neill and he was an architect who designed over 20 cinemas across Northern Ireland.

"Unfortunately this is the only remaining example of his work that is still trading as a cinema, in fact it's the only art deco, pre-war cinema left in Northern Ireland."

The centre is in the process of raising money for a major renovation of the building which will include full disabled access throughout, and will transform the Strand’s live performance facilities, dressing room, rehearsal room and workshop spaces to deliver a vibrant arts centre meeting the needs of the local community.

Mimi added: "It's always been somewhere where everybody gets together, where they share an experience. That's something that now as the Strand Arts Centre we want to continue as the ethos."
