The story of how Albert Luque was wasted at Newcastle United after clashing with Toon bosses

Nobby Solano is hoping that Newcastle United can quickly find a system that suits Joelinton and Miguel Almiron.

The Peruvian legend feels that a five-man defence is restricting the service levels to the South American duo and that a more expansive game plan is needed.

Solano provided the ammo for stars like Alan Shearer, Duncan Ferguson and Craig Bellamy in his time on Tyneside.

He was used out wide as both an out-and-out winger and at wing-back.

But he believes that the tactics need to be set up to cater for the front pairing - unlike the time when Newcastle allowed former Real Mallorca and Deportivo de La Coruña star Albert Luque to leave the club under a cloud.

Speaking about the man who joined Newcastle for £9.5million, Solano told the Chronicle: "When I was a player at Newcastle, we had Albert Luque who arrived with a great reputation from La Liga.

"Albert has unfairly been described as a bad signing for Newcastle.

"But for me he was the right player at the wrong time.

"He did not get on well with Graeme Souness and Glenn Roeder was tasked with the job of trying to coax performances by him.

"I was used as the translator and it's fair to say that Albert wasn't happy with Glenn.

"But by that time he had not been used properly, the system was wrong and Newcastle wasted a good player.

"We all remember Albert's goal against Palermo in the UEFA Cup or the derby against Sunderland and that was just a little taste of what he could deliver.

"It was just unfortunate for him to be here at an uncertain time.

"I'm hoping that the new lads like Joelinton and Almiron settle down soon and that we aren't talking in the same terms as Luque."

Luque went on to play for Ajax and Malaga but could not rekindle his old form and is now a TV pundit in his native Spain.
