The story behind Wales rugby star Aaron Wainwright's moustache

Welsh rugby fans have been left thinking whether World Cup sensation Aaron Wainwright had got his months mixed up in the frenetic last few weeks out in Japan.

Because the Dragons back-rower has been sporting a Movember-style moustache with the start of the start of the awareness season over men's health issues, such as prostate and testicular cancer, still more than a week away.

His new look out in the Far East got even greater exposure when the 22-year-old  grabbed his first Test try in his 17th international appearance in their World Cup quarter-final clash with France in Oita on Sunday.

He went on to be named Wales' man of the match in our ratings, which you can see here.

The story behind his facial hair actually goes back to his preparations for the Rugby World Cup when he had to pull out of a holiday to Prague with his mates.

With Wainwright's friends all growing the facial hair for the trip, the Wales star decided he would honour that part of the deal even though pre-tournament training, which saw Wales play four warm-up games after camps in Turkey and Switzerland, meant his holiday plans were aborted.

Wainwright said: "All my mates went away to Prague on a boys holiday and they said they were all going to grow moustaches. They said if I grew one too they were going to crop me into the photo so I didn’t feel like I’m missing out! I certainly don’t feel like I’m missing out now I’m here!"

It's been quite a rise for Wainwright this year. In the 2016/17 season he was  playing Championship rugby for Cardiff Met RFC and only made his Dragons debut in October 2017.

He made his Wales debut on the 2018 summer tour of Argentina.
