The story behind this massive Norwegian Air Force plane spotted at Edinburgh Airport

Passengers were left in awe after spotting a massive Norwegian Air Force plane parked at Edinburgh Airport on Tuesday.

The striking four-engine military transport aircraft, which has a Rolls-Royce turboprop engine, was clocked outside one of the terminal buildings, with images quickly finding their way onto social media.

These types of planes typically stop at Edinburgh Airport for a stopover, to collect cargo, refuel or even if they are taking part in a flyover. This particular aircraft was understood to have been a cargo flight, arriving in Edinburgh late Tuesday morning.

The Lockheed C-130J-30 Hercules model is used extensively by the US marine corps and air force in operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. The crew on these aircraft include two pilots and one loadmaster.

It was first used in April 1996 and is now operated by 13 different nations. The Royal Norwegian Air Force have had four of the aircrafts in operation since January 2014. Other operators include the Royal Australian Air Force, Royal Canadian Air Force, German Air Force and the Republic of Korea Air Force.

The Royal Air Force of the United Kingdom has 14 of the aircraft in use as of January 2020.

Earlier this month we at Edinburgh Live reported how a huge RAF aircraft had been spotted circling Edinburgh Airport before heading south to England.

The Airbus A400M is one of the biggest planes the RAF has and can carry as many as 116 troops, along with other military vehicles such as tanks and helicopters.
