The story behind the RAF jets heard above Edinburgh on Friday afternoon

Three Royal Air Force jets flew over Edinburgh and Fife on Friday afternoon as part of an air defence training exercise.

The Poseidon aircraft – two from Lossiemouth and once from Waddington – were heard above the Scottish capital, and off the east coast of Scotland, around midday and into the early afternoon.

This is the first time the three jets have been out together, with the aim to help train air crews based at the two bases.

According to the RAF the Boeing Poseidon MRA1 (P-8A) is a "multi-role maritime patrol aircraft, equipped with sensors and weapons systems for anti-submarine warfare, as well as surveilence and search and rescue missions".

They say it's mission system features "an APY-10 radar with modes for high-resolution mapping, an acoustic sensor system, including passive and multi-static sonobuoys, electro-optical/IR turret and electronic support measures (ESM)" – equipment which delivers comprehensive search and tracking capability.

The aircraft’s weapons system includes torpedoes for engaging sub-surface targets.

They have a wing-span of more than 37 metres and can go at speeds of up to 907 km/h.

A spokesperson from the RAF confirmed to Edinburgh Live that two aircraft from Lossiemouth and one from No. 54 Squadron at Waddington, England, were involved in the exercise, with air crew enjoying a successful day's training.
