The Storm head back to Melbourne as Sunshine Coast goes into three-day lockdown

The Storm announced on Tuesday they would return to Melbourne after seven weeks on the Sunshine Coast.

Their sudden departure comes as parts of Queensland, including the Sunshine Coast, have been sent into a three-day lockdown following an increase in COVID-19 cases across the state.

The premiers will fly from Melbourne to Newcastle on Thursday for their clash with the Sydney Roosters there later that night, before heading straight back to Melbourne.

"After 46 days we're heading back to Melbourne," Storm general manager Frank Ponissi announced on Tuesday.

"All the players, all the football staff and all our families that are up here with us. They'll be on a flight this afternoon back to Melbourne. So we hope to land tonight around 6:30.

"It's been a challenging 46 days but we're had a lot of success on the field and we've also enjoyed ourselves, but the uncertainty over the last seven weeks has certainly been challenging for the whole squad and the last few days has been no different and not knowing exactly what's going on.

"But now we know that we're going back this afternoon and we get ready for a game in Newcastle, then thankfully start playing your games back [in Melbourne].

"It's certainly not the ideal preparation to play a big team like the roosters but I'm very confident that this is such a resilient group and we'll certainly give it our best shot for Thursday night," he said.

The Storm relocated to Queensland indefinitely in mid-May when Victoria announced a seven-day lockdown due to a COVID-19 outbreak.

Ponissi said uncertainty has been their biggest battle but the club are now "thrilled" to finally be heading home.

"Hectic would be an understatement," he said.

"It's probably just the uncertainty. We had a meeting with the players on Sunday night and we just said expect anything this week, and that's the way it turned out.

"Yesterday, things were happening by the hour and it's just been one of those couple of days with all the uncertainty, everything coming out of Sydney and now with what's happening here in Queensland, so it was the ideal time for us to get out and it's quite interesting that now Victoria is the place to be.

"We're really thrilled and we're really looking forward, after getting through Thursday night's game, having a little rest and getting back on AAMI park against the Knights in a couple of weeks."
