The Steven Gerrard words on Alfredo Morelos that have come back to haunt the Rangers boss

Alfredo Morelos is under the cosh once again after his latest moment of madness cost Rangers any hope of catching Celtic in the league.

The striker has been involved in a host of flashpoints and he lost the plot on Sunday when he lamped Hoops skipper Scott Brown.

That red card, his fifth of the season, took the stuffing out of Rangers as they lost to their rivals to leave them 13 points behind with just seven games remaining,

Ryan Kent's second-half equaliser showed bottle but the 10 men, who played 60 minutes without Morelos, were running on fumes when James Forrest netted a late winner.

Boss Steven Gerrard has backed the 29-goal striker throughout his various trials and tribulations but was seething when he discussed Morelos after the game.

He admitted the striker wanted a chat but Gerrard revealed the 22-year-old will be docked a week's wages after his crazy reaction.

As angry as the Rangers boss must be there is also a feeling of sadness after the man he has constantly gone to bat for let him down in such a big game.

In fact, his manager was waxing lyrical about the goal machine just moments before kick-off and described Morelos as a "joy to work with".

Gerrard said: "He's been phenomenal for me throughout the season in terms of numbers and consitency.

"He's a very humble kid and he works hard on a daily basis, of course he plays on the edge and sometimes he gets it wrong.

"I'm lucky enough to be around him every single day and he's never caused me a problem, he's been suspended and stepped over the line on certain occasions which has frustrated me.

"But in the main he's a joy to coach."

What a way to let down your boss and the supporters who have constantly backed you from day one. His latest act of aggression is indefensible.

Morelos, who is under contract until 2023, is a wanted man with a host of sides such as Borussia Dortmund and Fenerbahce reportedly circling.

Rangers managing director Stewart Robertson spoke last month about valuing the forward in the same bracket as former Celtic star Moussa Dembele.

But the Frenchman, who joined Lyon in a £19.8million deal last summer, landed the Hoops such a lofty transfer fee because of what he did in big games.

Dembele scored six goals against Rangers and ran the show rather than running the bath on derby day.

Morelos, for all his ability, has failed to score against Celtic and has once again found himself causing his team problems rather than finding solutions when it mattered most.
