The Steppe Brothers

It is 1194 and the Steppe Brothers are a travelling theatre troupe, camp followers for an army that has been marching in the wrong direction for three months and which is now laying siege to a small Lithuanian town. Things are not going well for our heroes: mum is recently deceased in the props box after eating a dodgy pie and the brothers are caught between the rival claims of twin sisters for the crown of France. They will be lucky to escape with their necks.

The latest show from Rejects Revenge certainly doesn't hit the comic heights of the company's masterpiece Peasouper, but it serves very nicely. It has the edge over a lot of comedy theatre on the fringe because there is wit in its contrived witlessness and sense in its silliness. It is an exceptionally literate show for the genre and is performed by a cast of three with considerable dash. It won't change your life, but it will raise a genuine smile and, unlike a lot of comedy theatre, it knows about being a play and being playful.
