The stats that show Maurizio Sarri is doing a better job this season than the Chelsea fans think

Chelsea's season hasn't quite been the one fans were hoping for when Maurizio Sarri took over the reigns from Antonio Conte in the summer.

Sarri-ball was billed as the all-conquering style of football that would put the Blues back into the Champions League places after a poor fifth placed finish in the Premier League in the 2017/18 season.

But it hasn't worked out that way and with just seven games left in the season, fans are on Sarri's back and there is pressure on the Italian despite his relative infancy in the job.

They sit in sixth place in the league after 31 games, which is a place lower than they did this time last year under Conte - but that doesn't tell the whole story and the stats say that Sarri is actually doing a better job than some Chelsea fans believe.

Chelsea fans make shock U-turn over Alvaro Morata and Gonzalo Higuain

Sarri's Chelsea have picked up six more points than what Conte's Chelsea had at this stage of last season, with last year's crop having just been beaten 3-1 by Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge.

They have one more victory (18 compared to 17) and they've also lost two less games than they had done at this stage last season, losing just seven times compared to the nine, although they have drawn one more game.

In an industry where it's all about results, Sarri has shown a marked improvement over Conte from last season.

Sarri's Chelsea may have scored one less at this stage, but when you consider the problems they've had in the striking department with both Alvaro Morata and Gonzalo Higuain struggling to find the net, that single goal doesn't actually look too bad - indeed, it makes the fact that this side have scored 52 goals a bit more impressive.

Of course, it isn't all roses and there are certainly things that could have gone better, including the use of players and the manner of performances in some of those seven losses this season, with the 6-0 thrashing at the hands of Manchester City springing to mind.

But the comparison to the Premier League table last season does show that Sarri has made improvements to this side from Conte despite the obvious problems at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea finished with 70 points last season - Sarri needs just 11 more from seven games to better his predecessor's total.
