The statement signing Liverpool have allowed Chelsea to make

Gary Neville believes Liverpool missed out on sending a statement to the rest of the Premier League by signing Timo Werner.

The German striker looks set to leave RB Leipzig this summer to join Chelsea after a deal was agreed between the two clubs.

Werner had been heavily linked with a move to Anfield after scoring 31 goals and registering 10 assists in all competitions for the Bundesliga club.

Whilst Chelsea have already spent big on Hakim Ziyech and are targeting Leicester City left-back Ben Chilwell too, Liverpool may have to move shrewdly in the transfer market as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

With the transfer window set to take a different shape this summer, Neville understands why Liverpool didn't push through a deal for Werner but feels they missed out on the opportunity to send a clear message to their title rivals.

“His signing would have sent out an incredible statement," Neville said.

"He is a great striker, a young one that fits the profile of a Jurgen Klopp team. It would have told everybody elsewhere they are at.

"But we understand the financial difficulties everybody is in. Maybe Chelsea had a better deal on the table.

"Or maybe Liverpool didn’t want to go to the levels they had previously agreed to.”
