The stat that puts Cardiff City ahead of Manchester United and Arsenal as lady luck finally starts to turn in Brighton win

Cardiff City gave their hopes of Premier League survival a huge boost with a superb 2-0 win over Brighton at the Amex Stadium.

The result brings the Bluebirds to within two points of Chris Hughton's men down at the bottom.

Of course, there is still some way to go yet, but boss Neil Warnock must feel his side have a tremendous chance of preserving their top flight status.

Here are the key talking points to emerge from Tuesday night's win.

Cardiff kiss and make up with Lady Luck

It's fair to say Cardiff haven't had the rub of the green when it comes to refereeing decisions recently . The defeats to Chelsea and Burnley were punctuated by shocking calls from officials, and perhaps deprived Cardiff of precious points in the process.

Warnock must have smashed every mirror and run over every black cat in South Wales, such was the the level of his side's misfortune in recent weeks.

And when Brighton's Lewis Dunk went tumbling down in the Cardiff penalty area after 10 minutes, Warnock must have been cursing again.

However, Lady Luck instead finally flashed a beaming smile onto the Bluebirds at the Amex, denying the hosts an early foothold in the game.

This time, it was Brighton's turn to be furious.

Replays showed they almost certainly had a case, with Bruno Manga guilty of failing to keep his hands to himself, much to the frustration of Brighton boss Chris Hughton, who after four straight Premier League defeats is feeling the heat of the relegation battle.

He said after the game: "At the time I wasn’t sure, but I’ve seen it since and for me, yes, it is a definite penalty."

Warnock's view?

"I haven't seen it back, but someone told me that in the 28th minute we had a certain handball on a throw. I think it might have been one each tonight," he said.

Clearly there's just no pleasing some people - and to think some have suggested these things don't even themselves out!

Everything a jubilant Neil Warnock said after Cardiff City's sensational win over Brighton as attention turns to Liverpool

The Ralls Royce comes roaring back

The injury to Harry Arter was held up as a big blow for the Bluebirds ahead of kick-off on the south coast - and with good reason, he's been a key part of what's been good about Cardiff in midfield.

When Joe Ralls was given the nod in his place, you'd forgive some for feeling a little anxious about what the night had in store.

Ralls has struggled to cope with the demands of Premier League football at times and has been guilty of some rather lightweight performances in midfield on several occasions.

But, on the biggest night of Cardiff's season, he stepped up brilliantly.

Ralls was magnificent in the centre of the park, linking up defence and attack superbly, and constantly hassled an increasingly flustered Brighton midfield.

The bizarre injury that kept Harry Arter out of Cardiff City's win over Brighton and the latest on Aron Gunnarsson

This should be his benchmark if he wants to really make it as a real Premier League player.

"I thought Joe Ralls was my 12/10 tonight," said a beaming Warnock after the game.

I'm not sure I'd go quite that far, but this was a superb performance nonetheless, and one that will ease concerns over the possible absence of Arter ahead of a crucial run of games.

Gunnarsson shows Cardiff what they'll miss

Another man to shine in the centre of the park was Aron Gunnarsson, who despite recently confirming a move to Qatar , has shown little sign of shying away from the cause.

He was a colossus at the Amex, doing what he does best - ruffling the feathers of the opposition and mopping up the resulting mess. He was eventually withdrawn as a precaution just after half-time, but his contribution was nevertheless telling.

Much had been made of the physical threat posed by Brighton's Glenn Murray, but barring a couple of hairy moments, Cardiff neutralised the danger brilliantly, and that was largely down to the Icelander's contribution, although special mention must of course go to centre-back pairing Sean Morrison and Bruno Manga.

Whatever league Cardiff are playing in next season, they simply must find a way of replacing the 29-year old.

Judging by the reaction on social media, plenty of Cardiff fans agree.

Another clean sheet

Last night was the Bluebirds' ninth clean sheet of the season, a record that places them above Arsenal, Manchester United, and almost all of their relegation rivals.

Cardiff have the ninth best defence in the league, a remarkable stat given that they've been scrapping at the bottom of the league almost all season.

It could well prove a crucial component in a successful survival bid, although we shouldn't be that surprised given Warnock's love of keeping an opposition quiet.

Last season, he set his side the target of 16 clean sheets, which he felt would be good enough to mount a promotion challenge. He was proved right.

It remains to be seen whether he has a target in place for this season, but you get the feeling that a couple more would go a fair way to ensuring Cardiff are playing Premier League football next term.

Mendez-Laing's celebration speaks volumes

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing's stunning opening goal lit up a feisty contest on the south coast, although those on the inside showed little surprise at his moment of magic.

Warnock himself said: "He's done that in training, but I was pleased with his overall performance tonight. It's not just his goal. I thought he knew what he was doing, he was disciplined, and you've got to be disciplined at this level."

When a player produces a moment of such brilliance, it's easy for them to steal a monopoly on the limelight, but the reaction of the former Rochdale winger spoke volumes.

As soon as his curled strike hit the net, he burst off towards the touchline, high-fiving team-mates on the bench, and hugging nearly every member of the coaching staff.

'Messi-like' - Cardiff City star Nathaniel Mendez-Laing's Brighton beauty leaves Bluebirds fans stunned

The 27-year old went some way to explaining his celebration after the game, suggesting his moment of brilliance was forged by hard work on the training ground.

He told the club's official website: "We’ve been doing a lot of finishing drills in training. As soon as the ball came to me on the edge of the area, I got a shot away on my right-foot - and to see it go in made me very happy."

Whatever the reasoning behind it, the message was loud and clear - We're all in this together.
