The stars of the 2010 X Factor now - drug addiction, crisp ads and reality shows

The 2010 series of the X Factor has to go down as one of the most prolific seasons of the iconic music competition.

The show was at its peak, Louis Walsh, Simon Cowell and co. were as famous as it gets and Irish and UK audiences were glued every single week.

While there is no question where third place constants One Direction are, where are the rest of the stars now?

Matt Cardle

Matt, now 38, was mentored by judge Dannii Minogue to win the crown. He released his debut single When We Collide shortly after, giving him the coveted UK Christmas number 1.

He enjoyed some relative success after the show, reaching number 2 in the charts with his debut album Letters.

His next album, The Fire reached number 8, and Porcelain, reached number 14 in the UK charts and top 50 in the Irish charts.

Matt later checked into rehab, blaming his instant fame for his drug addiction.

Since then, he has done some West End shows, appearing in shows such as Memphis, Strictly Ballroom and Jesus Christ Superstar.

But he's not giving up on the music career just yet.

Cardle recently released a single in January called Purple Crayon, ahead of the release of his fifth studio album.

Cardle told Vacany Magazine that, “Purple Crayon is song about my struggles with addiction to Valium and the escape I found through using it. The song’s emotions are intertwined with imagery from my favourite children’s book Harold and the Purple Crayon.”

Most importantly, Matt spoke of a weird flirtation he once had with Meghan Markle, that ended in nothing, sadly.

Rebecca, now 34, enjoyed a solo career after coming in second place on the show in 2010. She produced four top ten albums in the UK, and released a single Nothing Left But Family in 2020, featuring Nile Rodgers. She says that the fifth album is on the way.

Other ventures outside the X Factor include appearing in an ad for Walkers Sunbites crisps.

She also opened a salon called the Beauty Boudoir in 2012 in Liverpool, but was later forced to close it in 2015, tweeting: "Had to close my little beauty shop safe to say I'm better at singing than manicures but what a wonderful experience."

She also made regular appearances on Loose Women from 2017-2019.

Cher Lloyd

Coming in at a respectable fourth, Cher Lloyd, 27, was a firm fan favourite on the show. Her version of Soulja Boy’s Turn My Swag On was a huge hit with viewers, but she couldn't quite make it to the final two.

After the show, Cher enjoyed success with a number one debut single, Swagger Jagger and a hit collaboration with Mike Posner on With Ur Love. Her debut album Sticks and Stones enjoyed commercial success, and she made the move to the US to try the market there.

She released a second album, Sorry I'm Late, toured with Taylor Swift, and released a collaboration with Demi Lovato before a hiatus.

She had a daughter Delilah-Rae with husband Craig Monk in 2018, and seems to be making a reach back into the music industry, releasing a new single and music video, Lost, last year.

Mary Byrne

Ah, Tesco Mary. The now 61-year-old won the hearts of viewers on the show and came in fifth place on the show. She soon signed a record deal with Sony Music Ireland and released four albums.

Her debut album Mine & Yours debuted at number one on the Irish Album Charts in 2011.

Mary was Niall Diamond's guest at the Aviva Stadium, appeared in Grease at the Grand Canal Theatre, and released an autobiography, This Is My Life.

She also made several appearances on TV, appearing regularly on Midday on Virgin Media One, and Celebrity Bainisteoir.

More recently, she toured Ireland in the play Dirty Dusting and many pantos across the country and regularly participates in the Christmas Celebrity Ward Walk at Children's Health Ireland at Crumlin.

Wagner Carrilho

Remember Wagner? Who could forget. The eccentric former PE teacher from Brazil brought some memorable moments to the show. She Bangs, anyone?

Unfortunately he was voted off before Louis Walsh could learn his name. Wagner has since welcomed a son Leon in 2012 and a daughter Lilian in 2014 with his girlfriend Lydia Longville.

He is still making personal appearances and custom videos on the back of his X Factor fame.

Katie Waissel

Katie, who is now 35, came in seventh place on the show after a controversial decision to save her over Aiden Grimshaw.

Katie released a self-titled album in 2011 but it failed to make any waves in the industry. She formed a band, Red Velvet Lovers, and then appeared on 2016's Celebrity Big Brother where she came in eighth place.

Fans of US reality TV shows will also recognise her appearance in Vanderpump Rules, where she attended Scheana Shay's 30th birthday party.

In her personal life, she has twice divorced and has a son, Hudson, who was born in 2018.

She's now a qualified personal trainer and seems to have left music behind her.

Paije Richardson

Paije has been relatively quiet since the X Factor spotlight was removed. He still continues to make music, with many writing credits to his name.

His most recent single, a feature on Hayden James' Waves of Gold, has over 1.8 million streams on Spotify.

Aidan Grimshaw

Aidan had relative solo success after the show, with a top 20 album, Misty Eye.

He now goes by the name Butterjack, and releases remixes on Soundcloud.
