The stark transfer warning Man United have been given over Tottenham target Bruno Fernandes

Former Tottenham and Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov has warned that signing Bruno Fernandes would not solve the Red Devils' problems this month.

The Portuguese midfielder has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League for the past few months, having come close to joining Tottenham in the summer, before being strongly linked with Manchester United this month.

However, Spurs were handed a boost yesterday as it emerged that Manchester United's move to sign Fernandes was all but over, with the Red Devils unable to agree a fee with Sporting Lisbon for the midfielder.

That was reported by The Sun, who claimed that United's bid to sign the Portuguese midfielder had collapsed due to Sporting Lisbon refusing to budge over their valuation of the player, with Manchester United not willing to meet Sporting's valuation.

Everything you need to know about the January transfer window

It has been reported that United had offered £42.5million up front, with a further £8.5million in add-ons for the 25-year-old, who was heavily linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur in the summer.

However, Berbatov has said that United need more than just one signing to solve the problems that have led to criticism of manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and the club in general.

Speaking to Betfair, Berbatov said: "I keep reading about Bruno Fernandes, he's not a magician, do people really think if a player comes in the team are automatically going to start winning?

"He's just one man, that's not how it works, it's a team game and you can't expect just one person to come it and change things at United, even if it is [Lionel] Messi or [Cristiano] Ronaldo.

"The situation they are in now need a team, they need that togetherness to get out of it all together, not just with one player."
