The stark pictures that show just how empty Cardiff City Stadium was today in the FA Cup

This was the bleak scene inside Cardiff City Stadium today as the Bluebirds played Carlisle in the FA Cup third round.

The match unfolded in front of a paltry crowd as supporters stayed away and the Bluebirds found themselves 2-0 down against League Two opposition after 45 minutes thanks to goals from Harry McKirdy and Jack Bridge.

The official attendance was put at 5,828 by the club, beating the record stadium low of 4,111 against Luton in the Carabao Cup back in August.

There was an eerie atmosphere inside the stadium, which was largely filled by the sounds of the travelling supporters who sang "Your ground's too big for you" in reference to the dearth of City fans inside the ground for the Cup tie.

Large sections of the stadium were actually closed for the day. You can see pictures from around the stadium in the gallery below.

The Bluebirds, who sit 57 places above Carlisle, were looking to bounce back from a humiliating 6-1 defeat at QPR on New Year's Day.
