Nottingham Forest’s share of a £50m relief package from the English Football League would be used up in less than a fortnight, according to one football financial expert.
The league’s governing body announced on Wednesday their plans for a cash boost to clubs in the Championship, League One and League Two as they look to cope with the coronavirus outbreak.
Games have been suspended until the end of April at the earliest, resulting in a lack of matchday revenue throughout the football ladder.
The £50m will be split into immediate payments for the rest of the 2019/20 season, and also an interest-free loan facility.
Reports suggested second tier sides would receive £800,000 each, with access to an optional interest-free loan of £584,000.
Chartered accountant and University of Liverpool lecturer Maguire has calculated how long it would take for Championship teams to “consume the advances and grants given by the EFL” - “based on their most recent wage levels and ignoring other costs incurred by clubs”.
For the Reds, Maguire estimates, the money would last just under 14 days.
According to his findings, Stoke City would see their share vanish the quickest, in nine days, while Barnsley fare the best, at 47 days.
