The Stanley Cup trophy tweeted a sweet note to Alex Ovechkin after double-OT loss

There will be a new Stanley Cup champion this year, as the defending-champion Washington Capitals lost to the Carolina Hurricanes 4-3 in a double-overtime thriller Wednesday night.

The loss, as a coworker jokingly mentioned after the game, is probably good news for Alex Ovechkin’s liver.

Because do you remember that epic tour Ovechkin went on after last year’s Stanley Cup title? It was an awesome, booze-filled party that at some points looked like it might never stop.

But that’s not going to happen this year, as former Capitals right winger Justin Williams found the back of the net for his NHL-record 15th career point in Game 7s to end what was the third longest Game 7 in NHL history and send the Capitals home for the summer.

The Stanley Cup trophy will miss spending time with Ovechkin, apparently, as it tweeted this perfect message right after the game:
