The staggeringly low reported clause holding up Leeds United target Daniel James' Swansea City contract talks

Swansea City's contract talks with Daniel James are being held up due to a possible buyout clause in his deal.

WalesOnline reported last week that precious little progress was being made in negotiations between James' camp and Swansea officials over fresh terms in SA1, with the imminent arrival of new chairman Trevor Birch set to grease those wheels.

An official contract has yet to be offered to the starlet, whose deal runs out in the summer of 2020.

Leeds United, Man City and Tottenham are among those who have been linked with his services.

According to the BBC , the key obstacle is a clause in James' contract which would see him leave South Wales for the staggeringly low fee of around £4million.

A transfer was in place for James to join Leeds last January in a deal which would have eventually totalled around £11million.

Manager Graham Potter would loathe to lose James, who has sparkled at points so far this season - particularly on the big occasions.

Potter said about his career rise: "It seems like every game and every time he's been on the pitch recently his value has gone up and his stature has gone up.

"He's just grown and grown. You had the Man City game and he had his full Welsh debut, but that goal, with social media and how everybody was talking about it, it was just one of those moments, when you look back at it, it was quite breathtaking when you see him running at full speed like that and the finish was fantastic.

"I'm really pleased for him. He's had a tough time, and he had a tough time last year as well probably. That's football. You need to enjoy the highs when they're around because there are some downs as well and he's experienced that. That's why it's good for him to come through them and it shows his determination and his character.

"Pretty much as soon as we came in you could see that about him. He had that determination and that desire to be a footballer and desire to play for Swansea City so that was an important thing for us."
