The staggering amount Liverpool paid agents over the last two transfer windows revealed

Liverpool once again top the list for the amount of money paid out to agents in the Premier League.

Between February 2018 and January 2019, the Reds forked out an eye-watering £43.8million to players' representatives, which is nearly £20m more than last year's figures.

The fee is comfortably the highest in the top flight with Chelsea once more in second having paid £26.8m to agents and intermediaries over the past two transfer windows.

Liverpool's sharp rise comes after the biggest spending spree in their history last summer when they spent around £170m on Naby Keita, Fabinho, Xherdan Shaqiri and Alisson.

It's the second successive year Liverpool have The Premier League transfer changes that will save Liverpool millions in the market , having handed over £26.8m to agents between February 2017 and January 2018.

The year previous Liverpool spent £13.8m in agents' fees when the likes of Gini Wijnaldum, Sadio Mane, Loris Karius, Ragnar Klavan and Joel Matip joined the club.

The latest figure is a near-£50m increase across the division with this year's total for all 20 teams coming in at over £260m. It means Liverpool have paid 16.5 per cent of the league's total, dwarfing their bottom line from 12 months ago.

The announcement comes after a new report from The Telegraph claimed the Premier League's 20 shareholders are due to meet on Friday to discuss new regulations designed to cut down significantly on the huge sums given out.

The plans will reportedly see the end of dual representation, meaning an agent can no longer be paid by both a selling and buying club when negotiating a move.

Currently, there are no limits or caps involved for work undertaken by an agent in relation to a transfer or contract negotiation, but the report states that new proposals will look to slash to eye-watering sums paid out from top-flight clubs.

World governing body Fifa is working with the Premier League to strike up a framework for how transfers and agent payments are regulated going forward.

There is also reportedly expected to be a return to an exam system for agents with the prospective changes to come into force at the start of next season.
