The staggering amount it will cost to fix Liverpool's shuttered swimming pools

Liverpool council is having to shell out an enormous sum to fix the city's struggling swimming pools.

Three pools across the city are currently shut after problems with electrics, plumbing and tiling in the buildings and issues with the pools themselves.

Pools at Liverpool Aquatics Centre in Wavertree could be closed until the end of August , while one at the Austin Rawlinson Lifestyles Fitness Centre in Speke could be shut until the end of September.

Tuebrook's Peter Lloyd Leisure Centre pool is expected to reopen later this week.

Deputy mayor and cabinet member Wendy Simon told last night's culture and tourism select committee that the closures, likely to stretch over the holidays, "couldn't have happened at a worse time".

Councillor Simon said: "What we have tried to do is give the maximum time and hopefully it will be shorter than that - but in terms of timing it is really difficult for people that this has come just before the summer holidays."

She said as well as meaning major disruption for people who use the pools, it would deprive the council of money vital to keep the centres running properly, as it will cost a whopping £400,000 to sort the leisure centres.

The pools at Liverpool Aquatics Centre originally shut in April after a light bulb exploded during a water polo event.

Subsequent draining of the pool revealed tiles on the city's only Olympic sized swimming pool needed to be replaced.

The pool at Austin Rawlinson closed for maintenance earlier this month but further inspection revealed more extensive repairs were needed on its plumbing system.

Peter Lloyd's pool facilities had to shut earlier this week after a burst pipe.
