The Squickerwonkers by Evangeline Lilly - review

Evangeline Lilly, Johnny Fraser-Allen, The Squickerwonkers

I don't usually review picture books but this one is really too scary for little kids. It tells the story of a girl called Selma who walked away from a fair and she went inside a scary ride that looked like a wagon - a bit like a house of horrors in a fair that you walk round. Someone spoke to her and said she could join the Squicker show. I think this book is so scary, the pictures nearly made me fall off my chair they are so terrifying. It reminded me a bit of Coraline by Neil Gaiman, except a bit more ripped up and puppetry. Bear in mind I can barely watch Coraline and wouldn't dare read it as it is too frightening. But this is a scary book! I still think it's an amazing book but for 8 and up, no little kids should read this because they will get nightmares.

I really don't care what I read as long as it's good but this is one of the best picture books I've ever read. I'd like to have more picture books written for my age (nine) because I love drawing and pictures as much as I love words. I think it's a bit sad that if you are good reader you aren't expected to read picture books.
