The squad numbers available to new signings at Sunderland in the 2019/20 season

The summer transfer window opened last month ahead of the 2019/20 season and it is a pivotal summer for Sunderland AFC.

After narrowly missing out on promotion to the Championship, the Black Cats will be keen to rebuild and ensure they return to the second tier this term.

Unlike last season, when Jack Ross had to oversee a major overhaul at the Stadium of Light, the majority of this season's squad will remain at the club this season.

The release of Sunderland's retained list on Tuesday confirmed the departures of four senior players with Robbin Ruiter, Max Stryjek, Adam Matthews and Luke Molyneux all released from the club.

But which players will still be around next season? And what squad numbers will be available for new recruits?

Matthews' departure means the number two shirt will be available and Sunderland are likely going to be in the market for a new full-back to replace the Welsh international.

The number 17 shirt is now also available having been vacated by Lewis Morgan who has returned to Celtic following his half-season loan spell on Wearside. This is significant as it is the number Lawrence Shankland wore at Ayr United last term.

Sunderland are reported to have made an offer to the prolific forward so it would make perfect sense for him to inherit the number 17 jersey should he make the journey south.

Numbers 20, 21 and 24 remain vacant having not been occupied last season, while numbers 25 and 26 are also vacant following the departures of Ruiter and loan forward Kazaiah Sterling.

Meanwhile, Bryan Oviedo and Lee Cattermole could be shifted on this summer to release the strain on Sunderland's wage budgets. As a result, numbers three and six could become available as well.

The full list of squad numbers are as follows:
