For several reasons, there was plenty of attention fixed on Jack Grealish in the midst of his £100million transfer to Manchester City.
On the back of his swashbuckling displays for Aston Villa - and England at Euro 2020 - the playmaker overtook his international teammate Harry Kane as a priority target for City.
A follow-up pursuit for the Tottenham striker remains on the agenda, despite potential financial complications.
Shirt numbers are a hot-topic in the modern game and some have argued that a nudge towards City's chances of signing Kane have already been issued by the club's decision on Grealish.
Indeed, as he was unveiled on the back of a British record switch, the former Aston Villa captain was assigned the coveted number 10 shirt - the same jersey as Kane wears at current club Tottenham.
Meanwhile, as City embrace life after Sergio Aguero, Gabriel Jesus has kept hold of the equally-coveted number 9, so what does that leave on the table for potential further signings?
Here, we take a closer look at the City squad numbers which are yet to be assigned this season;
Number 1 - Unassigned for the past two seasons, the current number one Ederson wears 31, while back-up stopper Zach Steffen was handed 13 upon signing for the club in 2019.
Number 4 - Not worn since Vincent Kompany called time on his City career in 2019, the number 4 shirt will certainly take some filling as and when it is reassigned at the Etihad Stadium.
Number 12 - A shirt usually reserved for substitutes in bygone years, only a handful of players have donned number 12 for City in the Premier League era; including Darius Vassell, Scott Sinclair and most recently Angelino, who moved to RB Leipzig two years ago now.

Number 15 - Previously worn by Sylvain Distin, Martin Petrov and Jesus Navas - among others - the number 15 has been available for new signings since Eliaquim Mangala left the club.
Number 18 - Could this be an outside bet for Kane, should City and Tottenham come to a positive conclusion with THE transfer saga of the summer? Before taking up the coveted number 10 in London, the England captain wore 18 during his early days as a Premier League player. In terms of City's recent history with this number, that reads Gareth Barry, Frank Lampard and Fabian Delph.
Number 19 - Another number which has yet to be reassigned. Leroy Sane wore the number 19 prior to his return to Germany with Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich last summer. Aside from the fleet-footed winger, this has also been owned by Joleon Lescott and Samir Nasri.
Number 23 - Retired following the tragic death of Marc-Vivien Foe, this number is no longer assigned to players.
As things stand, the following shirt numbers are also available; 24, 28, 29, 30, 32, 36, 37, 38, 39 and 40+ (except 47).
