The Springburn Maidens: Rare Glasgow sculptures found after being lost for over a decade

A rare collection of stone sculptures are being shown for the first time after being found discarded in an industrial unit.

The statues, called The Springburn Maidens, show the role women played during the industrial revolution in Scotland, and specifically, Springburn, which was a key player in railway manufacturing.

Depicting two women with tools in hand, the two statues are in six pieces, each framed as an individual sculpture within the exhibition.

Their whereabouts mostly unknown for over 10 years, since the communities much-loved public halls which they were once part of was demolished on Christmas Eve of 2012, against the wishes of the local community leaders and activists.

They are now being incorporated as part of You’re Never Done, a group exhibition featuring local and international artists, for Glasgow International;' Across The City programme in a bid to raise awareness of their significant cultural importance and the communities plight to preserve them.

It is hoped that by bringing them into the public domain once more, as a part of Gi 2021, it will ignite the search for a permanent home for them.

Representing the post-industrial history of Springburn and the surroundings where 80% of the built environment was demolished in the 60s and 70s to make way for a motorway, these statues deemed as architectural salvage are held in high regard and considered valuable artefacts have become a beacon of hope by the local community.
