'The spirit of togetherness will carry us' - Boris Johnson's response to Covid

Boris Johnson has urged everyone to summon their inner 'discipline' and 'resolve' to follow his new coronavirus restrictions.

The Prime Minister addressed the nation this evening (Tuesday) after rolling out a raft of fresh measures.

Under the new rules, pubs, cafes and restaurants will have to close at 10pm from Thursday.

People working in venues, and in shops, will also have to wear masks - any business failing to comply, will face tough fines.

Those who break the new rules around masks and gatherings will face a £200 fine.

Police and councils will get extra resource to enforce the rules, and Mr Johnson said the military could offer support.

During his speech, Mr Johnson called on everyone to work together to stop the increase in cases.

He said: "Now is the time for us all to summon the discipline, and the resolve, and the spirit of togetherness that will carry us through."

Mr Johnson warned, the virus is starting to spread again in an ‘exponential way’.

Infections and hospital admissions are up.

"We know, alas, that this virus is no less deadly than it was in the spring," he said.

The number of coronavirus cases in the UK has surged by 4,926 in the highest Tuesday rise since mid-April.
