Neath may have finished bottom of the Principality Premiership, but they do have something to celebrate in the shape of Try of the Season.
Flanker Craig Hill’s spectacular score against Cross Keys in January has come out on top in a public vote from a short-list of ten.
The poll was run on social media by the competition sponsors, Principality Building Society.
It was a really tough season for Neath, who won just one of their 30 league matches, amid a backdrop of financial problems.
They were relegated to the Championship well before the end of the campaign and finished 32 points adrift of the next nearest team.
But, crucially, they have survived to fight another day and now have a people’s choice top try to look back on.
The superb long-range score came early in their 34-17 defeat to Cross Keys at the Gnoll at the start of the year.
A clearance kick from Keys full-back Carwyn Penny didn’t quite find touch and his opposite number Jordan Rees set off on a scintillating run from his own 22.
Rees beat a couple of men as he took play up towards half-way, before finding support from back rower Hill, who fended off an attempted tackle and put on the gas to cross under the posts.
The try beat off competition from scores by Efan Jones (RGC), Paul King (Ebbw Vale), Iwan Temblett (Aberavon), Garin Price (Cross Keys), Dale Stuckey (Pontypridd), Osian Knott (Carmarthen Quins), Grant Rogers (Bargoed), Matthew Hughes (Llandovery) and Jamie Murphy (Bridgend) to come out top of the pile.
