The special Wales present Tottenham defender Joe Rodon delivered and the text exchange which said it all

Joe Rodon produced an heroic display as Wales booked their place in the knockout rounds of Euro 2020 with a battling display against Italy.

Rob Page's men withstood waves of Italian pressure and also had Ethan Ampadu sent off in the second half at Stadio Olimpico.

But - despite losing 1-0 - they clinched runner-up spot in Group A due to their superior goal difference over Switzerland who defeated Turkey 3-1 in Baku.

Tottenham Hotspur man Rodon - who also excelled in the 2-0 win over Turkey - was central to Wales' monumental defensive effort against the Azzurri.

He topped the Wales charts in each of the following categories: Clearances (6), blocked shots (2) and aerials won (4).

The central defender was also one of only two players (Daniel James being the other) to play a key pass while he had his side's only effort on target in Rome.

To put it simply, the former Swansea City man was nothing short of a colossus.

And his performance ensured he not only played a starring role in getting Wales into the last 16, but it also meant he delivered the perfect Father's Day present.

On the morning of the crunch fixture in the Italian capital, the defender asked his dad Keri Rodon what present he wanted for the occasion.

Rodon Sr responded: "A man of the match performance, please!"

The Wales and Spurs ace simply replied: "I'll do my best."

And the Rodon family were left overjoyed as the 23-year-old shone in the ferocious Stadio Olimpico heat to ensure his and Wales' run in the tournament was extended.

Page's side will take on one of Belgium, Russia, Finland or Denmark in the last 16 on Saturday.

The game will take place at Amsterdam's Johan Cruyff Arena. Kick-off is at 5pm.

The winner of that contest will book their place in the quarter-final at Baku's Olympic Stadium on Saturday, July 3.

Both Euro 2020 semi-finals and the final will be held at Wembley.
