The special security features on the new £20 - how you can spot a fake

The new £20 note has been hailed by the Bank of England 'as the most secure banknote yet'.

Featuring a portrait of the Queen, the banknote pays tribute to English Romantic painter JMW Turner.

It joins a series of notes made from polymer, a thin and flexible plastic material, including the Sir Winston Churchill £5 and the Jane Austen £10.

But aside from being more durable than paper notes, it has a number of special security features to help combat counterfeiters.

This is how you can check whether your new £20 note is genuine:

Front

Changing hologram

Tilt the note from side to side and you will see the words change between “twenty” and “pounds”.

See-through windows

It has see-through windows in the shape of fountains in Trafalgar Square. A foil image should be blue and gold with depictions of Margate lighthouse and Turner Contemporary art gallery.

The Queen's portrait

Her portrait should be printed on the window. Below the main portrait of the Queen, the value of the note should be written in small letters and numbers.

20

Under a good quality ultra-violet light, the number “20” appears in bright red and green on the front of the note, against a duller background.

Back

Turner

There's a purple foil patch containing the letter T.

Silver foil

The foil image on the back is in silver, instead of blue and gold.

Other special features

Accessibility

The Royal National Institute of Blind People has worked with the Bank of England to ensure the new £20 note is accessible for people with sight loss.

It has raised dots to help individuals identify the value of the note, and the higher the value, the larger it is.

Snapchat augmented reality

The new note can come to life where it will appear to transform into a live piece of artwork through augmented reality.

Snapchat users just need to hover over the note or over an image of it.
