The 'special' reason why Netflix's Firefly Lane isn't getting a third season

The creators behind hit Netflix show Firefly Lane has explained why the show won't be returning for a third season.

Firefly Lane is currently the second most watched TV series on Netflix in the UK. Based on Kristin Hannah’s novel, the heart warming drama follows the lives of Kate Mularkey and Tallulah "Tully" Hart, played by Sarah Chalke and Katherine Heigl, from their teenage friendship to adult difficulties.

The second part of season two dropped on the streaming service last month. However, showrunner Maggie Friedman has confirmed there will be no further instalments.

In an interview with Glamour promoting the new season, Friedman said she had decided to end the show. The head writer explained that season two had been extended to 16 episodes to accommodate her plans for the series.

Friedman said: "Originally, season 2 was just going to be 10 episodes, but I was talking to one of the Netflix executives who’s been such a great champion of the show and said, 'I know where the end of the story is.'"

She added: "'I know exactly what I want it to be. I just want to make sure that we get there and don’t end on a cliff-hanger and then something happens and we don’t complete it.' I wanted to make sure that I got to tell the full story."

Netflix has been heavily criticised recently for cancelling many of its original productions before the plots have been wrapped up, such as mystery sci-fi drama 1899. It seems that Friedman wanted to ensure Firefly Lane did not face the same fate and told the complete story of the novel.

Thankfully, the streaming giant was more than happy to accommodate Freidman’s wishes. Jinny Howe, Netflix Vice-President of drama series, said: “She wanted to tell the story in the two books. This felt like the most special and best way to deliver the series to the fans of the show while honouring Maggie’s vision at the same time."
