The south west high streets getting share of £1billion by Boris Johnson

Walk down Kingswood's High Street and you'll see a series of boarded up shops, fast food outlets and a few cash converters.

Like many small towns across the country, businesses have been moving out of the South Gloucestershire neighbourhood as they face ever increasing rates while footfall has been slowly declining.

But the area will soon undergo a massive transformation after prime minister Boris Johnson has just announced Kingswood will benefit from a share in £1 billion pot of money.

The cash will be divided between 50 towns across the country, with council leaders being ordered to invest the funding in revitalising the high street.

This could see the cash spent on anything from transforming empty shops, to better transport connections.

Mr Johnson said: "Our high streets are right at the heart of our communities, and I will do everything I can to make sure they remain vibrant places where people want to go, meet and spend their money.

"But with our town centres facing challenges, we're today expanding the High Streets Fund to support over 100 high streets to regenerate - backed by £1bn of vital investment.

"This scheme is going to re-energise and transform even more of our high streets - helping them to attract new businesses, boost local growth, and create new infrastructure and jobs."
