The South Tyneside coronavirus hotspots, according to Public Health England

There were over a dozen coronavirus cases in Hebburn alone last week, as South Tyneside's infection rate rocketed.

South Tyneside was added to Public Health England's watchlist as cases soared, with the public warned it was their "last chance" to avoid a local lockdown.

The area currently has one one of the highest infection rates in the country, and it is even ahead of Leicester - the first UK city to be subjected to a local lockdown.

New figures show that there were 68 confirmed cases in the week ending September 4.

The rate is so high, a game of football was scrapped as South Shields' opponents Blyth Spartans were too concerned about the risk of infection.

And analysis of Public Health England data shows that more than a fifth of cases last week originated from those living in Hebburn.

The figure means the town, nestled between Gateshead and Jarrow, is currently the main South Tyneside virus hotspot.

In comparison, South Shields had eight cases.

South Tyneside's struggle to contain the virus drew national attention last week as it was placed on the dreaded watchlist while South Shields MP Emma Lewell-Buck told Health Secretary Matt Hancock that a local lockdown would be 'devastating for the area'.

"The Government and the Secretary of State have messed up. The result has been loss of life and an economy in tatters," she told the House of Commons.

"It is little wonder that my home, South Shields, is now seeing a rapid spike in cases, and we are approaching a potential lockdown that will irrevocably devastate us."

Mr Hancock took issue with the "tone of this question".
