They say all good things must come to an end, but it seems some bad things can keep trucking on through anything. At least, that’s what it seems like given the latest news about the Sony Spider Verse.
The Sony Spider-Man Universe, or SSU for short, has been making movies set in the Spider-Man universe since 2018, but it’s fair to say they have not lived up to the hype. With the exception of their actual Spider-Man content (like the brilliant Into the Spider-Verse, its sequel Across the Spider-Verse, and of course the beloved No Way Home) the films have largely been critical and commercial flops.
Venom (2018) was the first of these, and while it was panned it at least made some money at the box office. The most disappointing outcome of this venture was undoubtedly the 2022 flop Morbius, a film that symbolises the poor performance of the SSU best. The movie was so widely disliked that it had its own ecosystem of memes dedicated to making fun of it, a fate not helped by the dislikability of its leading man and potential cult leader Jared Leto. The more recent Madame Web and Kraven the Hunter weren’t quite as vilified, but were very disappointing in terms of box office receipts.
However, as per The Hollywood Reporter, Sony is set to reboot the SSU with “new people,” meaning there could be a new dawn in this much beloved character’s extended universe.
This was confirmed by the CEO and chairman of Sony Pictures, Tom Rothman. The bigwig made the comments on The Town podcast, while also confirming that 2021s Spider-Man: No Way Home was banned in China due to the prominence of the Statue of Liberty in the film’s climactic scene.
As per TRH, Rothman discussed how “scarcity has value” and how “you got to make the audience miss you,” which implies that we are still quite some time away from a new film. What it will be about and who it will star are yet to be revealed, but frankly the only way is up.
