The “Someday” Trap: Why You’re Waiting for a Life That Will Never Come

“Someday I will write that book.” “Someday I will travel to Italy.” “Someday I will leave this job.” We all say it because it feels safe. Moreover, it feels like a plan.

However, “Someday” is not a plan. In reality, it is a comforting lie we tell ourselves to avoid the terror of starting. Ultimately, it is a dangerous trap that steals your life one day at a time.

You are waiting for the stars to align. Yet, the stars don’t care about your schedule. Here is why you are stuck and how to break free.

Perfectionism Is Paralyzing You

You want conditions to be perfect before you move. Perhaps you feel you need more money, more time, or more confidence. Consequently, you never take the first step.

Perfectionism is just fear in a fancy suit. It masquerades as high standards, but in reality, it is a defense mechanism against failure. Therefore, if you never start, you can never fail.

Start messy. Start broke. Start scared. Imperfect action beats perfect inaction every single time.

You Are Addicted to Planning

Planning feels like work. First, you buy the journals, research the courses, and make the vision boards. As a result, it releases dopamine, and you feel productive.

However, planning is not doing. You can plan for ten years yet move zero inches. Eventually, it becomes a form of procrastination. You are busy, but you are not effective.

Put down the planner. Instead, take one concrete, scary action today. Breaking the seal is the hardest part.

You Fear Who You Might Become

Change is terrifying. Furthermore, even positive change means the death of your current self. Subconsciously, you might sabotage your success because it threatens your identity.

If you become fit, wealthy, or successful, will your friends still like you? Will your family judge you? These hidden fears keep you anchored in “Someday.”

Acknowledge the fear. It is normal. But don’t let it drive the car. Your future self is worth the discomfort of growth.

You Overestimate How Much Time You Have

We live as if we are immortal. For example, we think there is always next year. Unfortunately, this is the ultimate illusion. Time is finite and unpredictable.

Waiting for retirement to enjoy life is a gamble. Likewise, waiting for the kids to grow up to pursue your passion is a mistake. You will never get this time back.

Urgency is a gift. Remind yourself that today is the only guarantee you have. Use it wisely.

You Are Waiting for Permission

As children, we needed permission for everything. As adults, however, many of us are still waiting for a green light. We look for validation from parents, partners, or society.

No one is coming to give you permission. Additionally, no one will hand you a certificate saying you are ready. Therefore, you have to seize it.

Give yourself permission. Validate your own dreams. Be the authority in your own life.

The Cost of Waiting

Every day you wait, your dream withers a little. The regret of inaction weighs heavier than the pain of failure. Ten years from now, you will wish you had started today.

Don’t let your life be a series of intended actions. Make it a reality.

Kill “Someday” Today

Your life is happening right now. Not tomorrow. Not next year. Stop waiting for the perfect moment. In truth, it doesn’t exist. Take the trip. Write the page. Quit the job. The “Someday” trap is comfortable, but it is a cage. Open the door and walk out. You are ready now.

What is one thing you have been putting off for “someday”? Declare it in the comments and tell me one step you will take today.
