The sombre scene at the Senedd after the Queen's death announced

Flags at half mast against the grey and gloomy sky- this was the sombre scene outside the Senedd following news that Queen Elizabeth II had died.

Silence filled the usually busy basin in Cardiff Bay - with only a handful of people walking around as advertising boards showed tributes to the Queen. A simple black and white photo of Queen Elizabeth smiling and wearing one of her iconic hats in the later years of her reign is shown on boards. The photo is simply captioned: "Her Majesty The Queen 1926-2022." Some flowers have also been laid at the Senedd.

Some shops, pubs, and restaurants remained open. However The Glee Club has cancelled a talk that was scheduled to take place tonight.

The Queen reigned for an incredible 70 years, making her the longest-ruling monarch in British history. She out-ruled many world leaders and heads of state from Russian tyrant Joseph Stalin to seven popes. The Queen has four children and following her death it was announced that her oldest child Charles, who was formally Prince of Wales, will now be King Charles III. His wife Camilla will now be the Queen Consort - which Queen Elizabeth granted her permission to use. The Queen died on Thursday, September 8 surrounded by her immediate family at Balmoral Castle in Scotland.

Buckingham Palace confirmed her death in a statement that read: "The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow."

Balmoral was one of the Queen's main residences and it was known to be her favourite. She spent the summer most years at the estate before her death.
