The Social Media column: Marty Whelan says he would have loved to host RTE's Late Late Show

Marty Whelan would have loved to have fronted The Late Late Show during the early days of his incredible career in RTÉ.

The legendary broadcaster, who turned 63 last week, admitted that it is the goal of every presenter in Ireland to talk to the nation on Ireland’s flagship chat show every Friday night.

“For most of us, the ambition to present The Late Late Show or something like it would always be there,” he began.

He told The Social Media: “It would be wrong not to say I have harboured thoughts about it over the years.

“I did a pre-recorded chat show called Off the Record a number of years ago and it was great fun.”

These days, taking on a mammoth slot like The Late Late Show would warrant a lot more thought from Marty given his other big shows in Montrose.

“I am currently presenting a breakfast radio show five days a week as well as Winning Streak, so I would have to make a big decision if something like that came along.

“I am very happy doing what I am doing right now and it is incredible how successful Winning Streak is,” he said as he took to the stage at Copper Face Jacks last night as Mr. Tayto turned 65.

Asked if he was a fan of the Irish crisp, Marty joked: “I brought about half a dozen bags of Tayto to the Eurovision this year, I am not messing.

“I always have to have snacks in the hotel room, especially because I am away for seven or eight days.”

After 20 years commentating at the annual event, he had learned a few tricks to keep going for a week in Tel Aviv, Lisbon, Vienna or wherever it may be on.

“I always ensure there is water, a sandwich and a glass of something refreshing. You don’t have to think about it if you throw in a bag of cheese and onion Tayto in the suitcase because they are already in the room,” added the father-of-two.

Tubs goes West for summer holidays

With the Late Late Show out of the way and a break from Radio 1 sorted, Ryan Tubridy is officially on summer holidays.

After travelling the Wild Atlantic Way this month, the RTE star is planning an Irish staycation with his daughters Ella and Julia as he enjoys some well-deserved time off.

While Tubs is fully organised when he is live on air, he seems to be quite relaxed when getting things in order at this time of the year.

He told us: “We are looking into holidays now because I haven’t really had a minute.

“We will go west to Connemara for a few days, I love heading out in Clifden, Inisboffin and Roundstone.

“I might try going abroad too but I haven’t made plans yet because it has been hard to plan while the show was on air.”

Asked if his girls are embarrassed sitting beside him at the pool or singing karaoke while on holiday, he joked: “They continue to be, as they always have been, very tolerant of their strange father.”

Una Healy's romance continues

Romance is continuing to blossom for Una Healy and her GAA star boyfriend David Breen.

Looking loved up as ever, the pair shared some snippets of their time together during a trip to South Africa’s Cape Town.

Letting her followers in on what they got up to, Una posted romantic snap from Camps Bay Beach.

She also shared videos of them climbing a mountain, while posing for with her view from the top.

Meanwhile looking a little more glam, posing in a lace frill dress, the former Saturdays singer said: “Last night in Cape Town & Stellenbosch #lekkerplek“.
