The Social Media column: Ciara Doherty feels Mark Cagney has 'one big gig left in him'

Ireland AM’S Ciara Doherty revealed she stayed cocooned from the news that Mark Cagney was leaving the show while she was on maternity leave.

Ahead of returning to the show back in September, the Virgin Media Television star refused to buy into the speculation over who his replacement would be.

Almost six months on from his departure, she is focusing on her job and not on who will be joining her on screen after Christmas.

Ciara told The Social Media: “All I know is that they will announce the final line up shortly.

“I am sure it will be in the next couple of months, but I have no idea who it is going to be.”

While she was sad to see Mark go, she wasn’t surprised when the news hit because he had confided in her about it.

“We had been talking about it over the last couple of months so it didn’t come as a huge shock in the end.”

The pair are still in touch and she has great admiration for him for fronting the breakfast show for two decades.

She has also backed him to get back into the world of broadcasting again.

Ciara went on: “I will miss working with Mark because we were real friends but I am excited for him at the same time because 20 years is a long time to present Ireland AM.

“It was a real achievement. I think he has one big gig left in him.

“I would love to see him doing a radio show because music is his passion.”

Ian backs Doireann - but doesn't tune in

Today FM legend Ian Dempsey admitted he hasn’t tuned in to hear his goddaughter Doireann Garrihy on the airwaves.

Doireann is currently presenting 2FM Breakfast alongside Love Island winner Greg O’Shea at the same time as Dempsey slot.

While he hasn’t listened back to her show, which competes for ratings with his own, he has backed her talent in the hot seat.

He told The Social Media: “I haven’t heard very much of her but I know that she is absolutely brilliant at what she does.

“We will keep doing our thing, but we have completely different audiences and there is room for all of us.”

Asked if he gave her any advice before the show went live, he simply said: “Doireann doesn’t need any advice, she is a total professional. She is fantastic.”
