The SNP celebrate convincing East Kilbride Central North by-election victory

Grant Ferguson was elected as the new councillor for East Kilbride Central North as he secured more than double the vote of his closest rival.

Councillor Ferguson secured an impressive 46.5 per cent of the vote across The Village, East Mains and St Leonards district, with Kirsty Williams of Labour coming closest to his total with 20.3 per cent of the vote.

The election was called after the sad death of Independent councillor Sheena Wardhaugh who had served the ward so well for a number of years.

Sheena, who passed away in June, was elected as an SNP member in May 2017 before resigning from the party three weeks later.

Following the victory, the incoming Cllr said: "The branch has been fantastic throughout, they were brilliant. I couldn’t ask for more."
