The Smiths: Patti and Sir Paul join 30 artists in an exhibition dedicated to their surname

What's in a name? A new show is bringing together more than 30 artists with nothing in common apart from their surname.

Fashion designer Sir Paul and US rocker Patti are among the Smiths who will display work at the Marlborough Gallery in Mayfair. The exhibition is the idea of Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan.

Gallery director Pascal Spengemann said: “Maurizio mentioned that he had always wanted to do a show called The Smiths featuring every Smith he could find. We just took him up on it and ran with it. I thought it was funny but as it grew it became something more complex and interesting.”

Sir Paul is still finishing his work for the exhibition. Mr Spengemann said: “Sir Paul is our neighbour so it just seemed right to ask him.

“He graciously agreed to participate and we are all excited to see what he contributes.”

Sculptor David Smith and Londoner Bob and Roberta Smith will also feature in the show, which opens on July 3.
