The Smiler ride at Alton Towers breaks down again leaving people stranded 100ft in the air

Rollercoaster lovers were left stranded after The Smiler ride at Alton Towers broke down once again.

The ride stalled at around 6pm yesterday (July 24) leaving dozens of people suspended 100ft in the air.

One Twitter user claimed they were there for around 20 minutes before being helped to safety.

A terrifying video of the event posted also posted on Twitter, showed people hanging vertically, looking directly up the track towards the sky, MirrorOnline reports.

Engineers were eventually able to free those from the carriage after reversing it back down the ride.

An Alton Towers spokesperson told said: “We apologise to all guests affected by the stoppage on The Smiler late this afternoon.

“Our guest relations team have spoken to everyone on board to offer return tickets to the park as compensation for the inconvenience.

“Our technical team are working to reset the ride this evening so this should not affect guests visiting the park tomorrow.”

The most serious incident occurred on June 2, 2015, when a loaded train collided with an empty test train, causing serious injuries to a number of riders.

Vicky Balch and Leah Washington who were at the front of the car had to have a leg amputated.

The crash hurt business as well, leading to such a slump in ticket sales that six rides were closed at the park during the 2016 season.
