The Small yet Striking Detail That Takes Absolutely Anything and Everything Up a Notch

Small but mighty. (Credit: Courtesy of Zara)

Sometimes it's the little things that have the biggest impact. Like tiny bows placed strategically around your strands. Or a couple mini rosettes decorating a top or bottoms. Or barely-there shorts that feed into the enduring no-pants craze. You can place grommets, aka eyelets, into that category as well.

The small round holes punch up practically everything. They're most commonly seen on belts and for good reason. Their inclusion gives you ample options when it comes to loosening or tightening the belt. But that's not all they're used for. Recently, they've become a popular way to add some personality to handbags. Alaïa chose to decorate its heart-shaped crossbody with the see-through accents. (Actually, Alaïa is king in this case since the fashion house covers an array of its products in grommets.) Jacquemus' mini bag also plays peekaboo, while Tory Burch's take embraces wider circumferences. If you're looking for a more restrained approach, see Reformation's entry where only the strap features holes.

There are also plenty of footwear incarnations, especially in ballerina form. Gianvito Rossi's black leather pair boasts grommets all over. Ganni's turquoise flats only have them decorating the buckles. Either way, you win.

You can even find them on clothing. Placement is obviously paramount in this case. Saks Potts was pretty restrained regrading the eyelet placement on its chestnut-colored midi skirt. Miaou restricted them to its pants' waistbands. Ganni balanced out its cropped jacket by keeping them to just one side. Off-White, on the other hand, created a bust outline on its black turtleneck top. Zimmermann also enhanced the bustline of its one-piece swimsuit with several eyelet accents.

Keep reading to see the most sartorially significant grommet pieces. Prices cover a pretty large range, but we were able to track down several options that ring in under $100. One final piece of advice. Stick to one holey item per outfit. Otherwise, the small detail becomes a distracting theme.
