Jandy Nelson manages to capture the emotional rollercoaster that comes with grief while managing to make a feel good story filled with love and laughter. The use of poems scattered throughout the book to show the feelings of the main character Lennie makes it a more personal read.
It highlights how life is never following a straight line and can suddenly be changed completely by one surprise event. This book helps you to understand that even with a death of a close loved one it can still continue and be a beautiful and challenging mess but will always have a happy part to it.
Throughout the book you see how each individual character is dealing with the grief and how it changes them from how they're portrayed in flashbacks. It also shows you the mad ideas that run through your head when you want to do your best for the people you lose. It is set in a small town and is very relatable which makes it one of the best books I have read.
