The six Welsh fish and chip shops named among the UK's top 50

Six Welsh fish & chips shops have been named among the UK's top 50 by industry experts at Fry Magazine.

Chippies in Cardiff, Swansea, Anglesey, Neath and Maesycwmmer were given the nod for the 2021/22 list after mystery diners paid them a visit.

The mystery judges visited each establishment that entered the shortlist, unannounced, to sample the food and assess key aspects of the business, from the cleanliness of the premises, to staff knowledge and professionalism, to their social media presence.

The six Welsh fish & chip shops named in the top 50 are:

- Fish Kitchen 1854, Maesycwmmer

- Hikary’s Fish Bar, Neath

- Hiks, Brynhyfryd, Swansea

- Port Chippy, Amlwch, Anglesey

- The Golden Fry, Benllech, Anglesey

- Yan’s Fish Bar, Cardiff

Each had the chance to score 100 points, and the magazine said that the standard was once again extremely high, with the benchmark being a weighty 96% or over for takeaways to win an award and 95% or over for restaurants.

Reece Head, competition organiser, comments: “We’re so pleased to announce this year’s winners. The awards recognise and celebrate the hard work, passion and dedication that these operators put into running their businesses.

“It’s been a tough couple of years for the industry, in particular for restaurants that have had to deal with closures, but operators continued to adapt, motivate their workforce and invest in new equipment and systems that have seen them come out the other side stronger and in a better position.

“Our 50 Best Takeaway and 10 Best Restaurant winners really do represent the best in the business and they continue to showcase fish and chips as a high quality, value for money meal.”
