The Six Nations prize money each team just won as WRU's drops by nearly £4m

Wales saw their Six Nations prize money drop by nearly £4 million this year compared to last season's Grand Slam campaign.

The Welsh Rugby Union had to make do with just £1.7m after defeat to Scotland condemned Wales to a fifth-placed finish. Last season's clean sweep saw Wales scoop an estimated £5.5m.

Wales' loss to Scotland effectively cost the WRU £500,000 it seems, with a fourth-paced finish reportedly worth £2.2m this year.

Champions England secured £5m for the RFU, with Unions throughout the world all desperate for an injection of cash after being hit by the coronavirus pandemic.

The WRU have already taken out a £20m loan to keep professional rugby afloat after losing tens of millions in revenue with no fans allowed at matches and no concerts or events able to be staged at the Principality Stadium. Their recently published accounts laid bare the issues being faced.

In terms of the Six Nations, it's thought the prize money only actually accounts for 15% of the total funds on offer to the different Unions.

The next 75% of the pot is then divided equally between the teams - Rugby Paper report this would equal around £13.5m each - before the final 10% is calculated according to the size of each side's union, with England and France receiving far more than the other nations in the past due to the fact their union's have many more clubs.

And then, of course, there are other financial rewards for players featuring in the championship, too, with match fees, image-rights payments and player bonuses.

Here's how much each team ares estimated to have won this year in prize money:

1st. England: £5m

2nd. France: £3.7m

3rd.. Ireland: £2.7m

4th. Scotland £2.2m

5th. Wales £1.7m

6th. Italy: £1.2m
