Bergkamp over Firmino, surprise in midfield - The ultimate combined Arsenal and Liverpool team

It finally happened. After 44 games unbeaten, Liverpool tasted defeat away at Watford last weekend which stopped them from equalling Arsenal's Premier League Invincibles record.

The Reds were given an almighty scare a few days earlier against West Ham United as after an hour they trailed 2-1 at Anfield, but the comeback was inevitable and goals from Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane ensured the runaway leaders kept their unbeaten run intact.

However, it came to an end at Vicarage Road - much to the delight of Arsenal fans as well as ex-players - but the 3-0 loss seemed to have come as somewhat of a relief to Reds boss Jurgen Klopp.

Mikel Arteta says Arsenal should have scored more in Portsmouth win

"Not really, because I don’t think you can break records because you want to break records," he told reporters when asked if he was bothered about not breaking the Gunners' record. "You break records because you are 100% focused on each step.

"It was clear that at some time we would lose a game. We didn’t wait for it but it was clear that it would happen. Tonight it happened. I see it rather positive. Because from now on we can play free football again.

"We don’t have to defend or try to get the record we just can try to win football games again.”

Because of their long unbeaten run, there has been plenty of discussions and debates as to if they're the best team the English top flight has ever seen.

Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea certainly have enough of an argument to suggest otherwise.

In the Gunners' case their unbeaten campaign from 2003/04 was in serious danger of being eclipsed by the Reds and for that reason comparisons are being made.

But who would make an all-time XI consisting of Arsenal's Invincibles and the current crop of Liverpool stars - nicknamed the 'Unbearables'?

Well, football.london offered supporters the chance to make the tough decisions.

And unsurprisingly those who responded have come up with a team which is sure to cause even more debate between both sets of supporters for many years to come.

The first big decision was the goalkeeper. Despite conceding five goals in two games against the Hammers and Watford, it's Alisson Becker who gets the nod over Jens Lehmann - who didn't taste defeat in the league until his second season at the club.

It's split down the middle when it comes to the back four with two players from each side. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ashley Cole are the full-backs, while it's a Virgil van Dijk-Sol Campbell defensive pairing.

Midfield is where things get interesting as seen in the graphic below.

Whilst Patrick Vieira would be comfortable in the holding role and Dennis Bergkamp could play as a number 10, Freddie Ljungberg's position would be up for debate as he could have the job of a box-to-box midfielder.

In attack Thierry Henry leads the line with Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane on the flanks. These picks means there's no room for the likes of Robert Pires, Roberto Firmino, Kolo Toure or Fabinho.

Combined XI: Alisson: Alexander-Arnold, van Dijk, Campbell, Cole; Vieira, Ljungberg; Salah, Bergkamp, Mane; Henry
