The site of a popular former Italian restaurant in Newport has gone up for sale

The building which housed a popular Italian restaurant in Newport for nearly half a century has gone up for sale.

A pair of period three-storey properties on Clarence Place which formerly housed the Chez Giovanni restaurant are now on the market as a mixed-use commercial and housing development.

Chez Giovanni was once a regular haunt for fans of Italian food in Newport, but closed its doors in 2016 after more than 40 years in the city.

The restaurant, as well as its adjacent former Topolino's wine bar and bistro next door, are both offered as part of the development.

According to the listing on property site Rightmove, the businesses are closed due to the owners' ill health but are still fully fitted out and licensed to trade.

The building's sellers also have permission to convert its upper floors to a nine-bed house of multiple occupancy (HMO).

There is also permission to merge the two restaurants on the ground floor into one larger restaurant space.

But in case you're thinking of finally kick-starting your dream restaurant plans, be warned; it doesn't come cheap.

The building currently has a guide price of £500,000 according to the property site Rightmove, so you'd better have your cheque book handy.
