It’s a good time to buy a PS4. No, really! Yes, Sony and Microsoft are getting ready to launch new hardware next year, and some modern games are struggling to run on the base model hardware from earlier in the generation. But also: so what? The PS4 can play hundreds of incredible games that are now, like the PS4 itself, wicked cheap. You can save yourself a lot of heartache if you just jump into console generations late, and the PS4 easily has enough games to entertain yourself for the next decade or so. And here at Black Friday 2019, it’s actually pretty easy to pin down the best deal.
Sony PS4 1 TB with God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn and The Last of Us Remastered for $199.
Those are three killer games right there, and I’d guess that they’re worth the price of admission alone. They represent some of the best of Sony’s first-party development over the course of an excellent generation, and there’s a lot more where that comes from to boot. Uncharted 4, for example, is running at $9.99 this Black Friday.
So if you like games but for whatever reason do not yet have a current-gen console, this is a good deal. Or maybe you’ve been Xbox this generation but wanted to check out some Sony exclusives before new hardware arrives: again, a good deal, and barely more expensive than it would have been to buy each of these games full price at launch.
The PS4, like the Xbox One, will likely be supported for at least two years or so after the new hardware launches. It may not play everything, and it certainly won’t play new games with as good graphics as the new machines, but the industry at large is aiming for a more seamless transition than past generations, and that’s likely going to translate to a PS4 that’s useful for at least two years, maybe more. You clearly aren’t getting the latest and greatest by buying into the last year of a console generation, but you likely don’t care that much if this is a consideration at all.
