The Simpsons replaces Hank Azaria with black actor Alex Desert as voice of Carl

The Simpsons has recast the voice of Carl Carlson with black actor Alex Desert replacing Hank Azaria.

Carl is known to The Simpsons fans as Homer Simpson's co-worker at the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant which is owned by the scheming Mr Burns.

Hank Azaria had voiced the character of Carl on the show from 1989 onwards.

However, following changing political climates and Black Lives Matter protests earlier this year, the show announced that white actors would no longer be voicing non-white characters such as Carl and Apu Nahasapeemapetilon.

In June the showrunners of The Simpsons released a statement which read: "Moving forward, The Simpsons will no longer have white actors voice non-white characters."

Now it has been confirmed that Carl will be voiced by Black actor Alex Desert, best known for his turns in High Fidelity and Swingers.

He is confirmed to be playing Carl in at least the upcoming season 32 premiere, but it is unknown if he will continue to voice Carl beyond this or if Desert will voice multiple characters on the show.

The controversy of the animated show's handling of the non-white characters reached a fever pitch when a 2016 documentary by Hari Kondabolu entitled The Problem with Apu was released.

The documentary disentangled the stereotypes relating to the character and saw Hari interview multiple actors and comedians of South Asian heritage to discuss the impact the character of Apu has had on their lives and careers.

The show responded in the episode No Good Read Goes Unpunished, which saw Lisa attempt to rewrite Marge's childhood favourite book which contained racially insensitive stereotypes.

Eventually, Lisa says: "It's hard to say. Something that started decades ago and was applauded and inoffensive is now politically incorrect. What can you do?"

However, Azaria has now stepped down from playing non-white characters.

He told The New York Times in February : "Once I realised that that was the way this character was thought of, I just didn't want to participate in it anymore.

"It just didn't feel right."

Speaking to producers it was agreed that changes should be made.

"When I expressed how uncomfortable I was doing the voice of the character," he said, "they were very sympathetic and supportive.

"We were all in agreeement."

The Simpsons is available to watch on Disney+ in the UK, with repeats shown on Channel 4 and Sky One.
