Expert shares why a spoon can help keep your leftover prosecco fizzy

There’s nothing worse than opening a bottle of prosecco, thinking you’re going to finish it, but not getting round to it.

So, how can we preserve the half a bottle of champers we just didn’t get round to? Well, there are some old wives’ tales which just don’t sit right with us, and the truth behind them is constantly being debated.

One of which is the ‘apple a day’ theory, which may keep the doctor away, but perhaps not the dentist…

But then there are some which actually may be true, and one of those involves booze - yum. Let us introduce to you - the teaspoon in bottle theory.

So, as we’ve said, you’ve had a party and there’s leftover champers, prosecco, you name it, and you definitely don’t want to waste it.

One popular theory is that you can keep your fizz fizzy, even when open, by dropping a spoon in the top of the open bottle - then putting it in the fridge.

Other suggested methods include using cling film, or a hermetic cork, but that just sounds unnecessarily complex.

But, is there any truth in the teaspoon theory? Surprisingly, for an old wives' tale, it actually does hold truth.

Chef Luis Bollo from Salinas even went as far as to experiment with this himself.

"In Spain, we are the biggest consumers of cava and Champagne in the world," Luis told Grub Street .

So presumably this is a matter close to his heart then.

"My father and my grandfather, whatever cava was left over they just store it with the spoon from one day or the other. I don’t know what’s going on, but it works pretty well."

As for the science behind this trick, it's apparently because the dangling handle of the spoon helps cool the air inside the bottle more quickly.

The cooler the air, the denser it is, so it sits on the surface of the liquid, almost acting as a type of pocket and prevents the bubbles from escaping too quickly.

Meaning, your bottle of fizz will still be delightfully drinkable for another day - just add orange juice at breakfast!
